Having been a nurse for over 20 years and a nurse practitioner for over 10, Karen has enjoyed a career that has been clinical, educational and managerial. Her goals have been to be clinically excellent while always provided empathetic care focused on her patients and their families. In addition to her clinical practice, KarenKaren has spent more than 15 years of her 20 years in the medical field caring for children who are not likely to survive their illness and their families. Her focus in caring for these precious ones and their families is to make every day the BEST DAY POSSIBLE!! She has worked very diligently to learn her craft, attaining her advanced certification in hospice and palliative medicine as well as earning a post graduate certificate in pediatric bioethics.

has had the opportunity to teach both nationally and internationally about pediatric palliative care, with audiences from Sub Saharan Africa to Singapore to Yerevan, Armenia. In her teaching, her goal is to always expand the reach of pediatric palliative care to the most vulnerable-our pediatric patients and their families and thereby lessen suffering both here domestically, and around the world.

Karen has had the opportunity in the stage of her career to focus on teaching others how to practice the art of palliative medicine. She has taught often in the national and international setting, with audiences ranging from psychosocial providers to nurses and physicians. It is her goal to multiply the workforce who is caring for these patients and their families so we can care for more and more children and their families, and ultimately no child goes without the compassionate care they need.

Karen recently transitioned form her work as a full time Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner into the field of neuromuscular disorders, where she can continue her palliative practice, alongside a robust clinical research patient population new to her home institution of St. Jude.

currently works at St. Jude in Memphis Tennessee. She earned her undergraduate degree in nursing at The University of Memphis, followed by her master’s degree from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. She earned a post graduate Certification in Pediatric Bioethics from Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, MO and is a certified VitalTalk Shetrainer. She is supported in her work by her incredible husband, six children and three beautiful grandchildren.
