Overview

Registration is now closed for PPOS 2018.

This second annual interdisciplinary symposium will focus on the comprehensive care of children with cancer and their families. Featured experts and a panel of bereaved parents will cover a host of challenging subjects, including communication of difficult news, ethical issues in pediatric oncology, management of refractory pain and complex symptoms, and legacy building and bereavement care. Oncology and palliative care clinicians as well as psychosocial professionals (psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, chaplains, etc.) are invited to attend.

This year, we have added a preconference day on September 26 with sessions on integrating psychosocial standards into pediatric palliative oncology care and incorporating bereaved parents into education and parent-to-parent support programs. We are also pleased to host the Tennessee Hospital Association Regional Meeting that day. During the symposium, we have greatly expanded our selection of breakout workshops.

Please choose Schedule above to see more information about these workshop and sessions.

We are also delighted to announce a call for abstracts for the inaugural St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Young Investigator Work-in-Progress Scholarship Award. Please see the Abstracts section for more information.

Special Wednesday Night Event

All registered attendees are invited to join us Wednesday, September 26, at 6:30 for a special screening of Dr. MR Rajagopal's film Hippocratic: 18 Experiments in Gently Shaking the World. Dr. Raj is considered the father of palliative care in India, and this film follows his life as he pursued his dream of bringing ethical practice and whole person care to modern medicine in his country.

Objectives

  1. Summarize and explain the basic concepts of pediatric palliative care.
  2. Recognize and list 5 benefits of integrating psychosocial standards into pediatric palliative care.
  3. Identify and manage end of life symptoms in children with cancer and high risk illnesses.
  4. Prepare for communication challenges with patients, families and interdisciplinary team members.
  5. Describe the process of developing a parent-supported bereavement program.
  6. Define fundamental principles that guide ethical decision making and resolving conflict.
  7. Identify key pediatric palliative care issues that lead to Compassion Fatigue and apply self care techniques to enhance resilience.
  8. Demonstrate current models of pediatric palliative care integration in the outpatient and home setting.
