Friday, May 22, 2020, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Marlo Thomas Center Board Room, Memphis, TN

Overview

Please note: This conference has been canceled due to the increasing spread of COVID-19 so that we can decrease the risk to the immunocompromised children of St. Jude. We are considering all options for rescheduling the course.

This mini-symposium is a one-time event that will bring together experts in sickle cardiomyopathy from St. Jude, UTHSC, and outside institutions. This symposium will discuss topics in the emerging field of sickle cardiomyopathy, including new diagnostic tests, definitions for the most common forms of sickle cardiomyopathy and its clinical outcomes, value of screening for cardiomyopathy, and therapeutic options. Sickle cardiomyopathy is the most common cause of death among adults with sickle cell disease, however its pathophysiology and treatments are not well defined. In the past 2 to 3 years we have seen an emergence of data supporting a mechanism for the development of sickle cardiomyopathy that involves the progressive development of myocardial fibrosis, leading to worsening diastolic dysfunction. While this mechanism seems supported by animal models, there is a dearth of validation studies and treatment modalities for sickle cardiomyopathy. This symposium will focus on the review of existing and upcoming data on the pathophysiology of sickle cardiomyopathy, clinical outcomes, diagnostic methods, and potential therapies.

Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Explain definitions and describe outcomes of sickle cardiomyopathy
  2. Compare current and new diagnostic methods for sickle cardiomyopathy
  3. Summarize the evidence for sickle cardiomyopathy screening and treatment
  4. Identify potential research collaborators among the participating institutions

Registration

This symposium is free, but pre-registration is required.

Registration is now open, and will close on May 15, 2020.
