Overview

This 4-part workshop is designed for physicians, clinical fellows, and advanced practice providers. It will provide education and training on documentation and coding practices necessary to ensure proper reimbursement and accurate medical records for our patients, which will maintain the organization within the Federal and State compliance requirements as well as St. Jude’s core values. Each part will provide detailed information for each aspect of documenting and coding to help providers stay compliant.

Each part will be repeated and be held once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

Schedule

February 10, 2020 (Part I); 9am-11am or 2pm-4pm

February 11, 2020 (Part II); 9am-11am or 2pm-4pm

February 12, 2020 (Part III); 9am-11am or 2pm-4pm

February 13, 2020 (Part IV); 9am-11am or 3pm-5pm

February 17, 2020 (All day); 8am-5pm (includes 1-hour lunch break)

If you are unable to attend all four parts during the quarter, please see the other available dates below.  You must attend all four parts to complete the workshop.

Compliance Training Workshop Series 2020: Quarter 2 (May 2020)

Compliance Training Workshop Series 2020: Quarter 3 (September 2020)

Compliance Training Workshop Series 2020: Quarter 4 (November 2020)

Part I

Documentation and Medical Record Compliance. This part of the workshop will cover all aspects of proper and improper ways of documenting outpatient evaluation and management (EM) visits that include new patients, consultations, and established visits including establishing medical necessity.  Also included is documenting for time, teaching physician documentation, and new versus established patients criteria. This part will also cover how to develop good ethical documentation practices within the medical record and why these practices are important. It will cover auto-prompts and copy and paste techniques, such as bringing information from last visit(s) forward, and proper guidelines associated to stay within compliance. It will also cover signature requirements as well as insufficient documentation errors.

Part II

EM Coding. This part of the workshop will cover all components that warrant specific CPT codes that are chosen from the provider’s documentation. The history, examination, and medical decision-making aspects that are required for each level of EM code will be covered in detail. New, established, and consultation services exploration will help determine all requirements for each type of patient.

Part III

ICD-10 Coding. This part will cover how to choose the correct diagnosis/diagnoses to the highest specificity possible to maintain the most accurate medical record as possible. The objective in this part is for the provider to learn how to choose the best diagnosis option for disease processes and conditions. Also included is the determination of which diagnoses to include when billing and which diagnosis is primary, secondary and so forth.

Part IV

Case Studies. This part will provide case examples to pull all aspects of training from the Parts I-III together to ensure comprehension. Providers will have a hands-on experience that will enhance understanding of how all parts of documentation relate to choosing the proper CPT code for proper billing and reimbursement.

Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the legal and ethical importance of documenting Evaluation and Management service visits correctly
  2. Explain why medical necessity must be established
  3. Identify appropriate documentation for the medical record
  4. Choose an appropriate Evaluation and Management level of service after documenting the note
  5. Choose the correct ICD-10 diagnosis to its highest specificity for patient diagnoses
  6. Combine all segments together for accurate CPT/ICD-10 coding and billing for proper reimbursement
