Overview

*Registration is now closed for the 2019 Pediatric Palliative Oncology Symposium.

The 3rd Annual PPOS will focus on the comprehensive care of children with cancer and their families.  Featured experts and a panel of bereaved parents will cover a host of challenging subjects, including communication of difficult news, ethical issues in pediatric oncology, management of refractory pain and complex symptoms, and legacy building and bereavement care. Oncology and palliative care clinicians as well as psychosocial professionals (psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, chaplains, and so on) are invited to attend.

Click the Schedule tab above to see the agenda.

In addition to the Symposium on Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27, we are offering an entire week of training and educational opportunities for healthcare providers:

  • Sept 23-24 (Monday and Tuesday): Two-day ELNEC course for advanced practice nurses
  • Sept 24-25 (Tuesday and Wednesday): Two-day pediatric massage course for all healthcare providers
  • Sept 25 (Wednesday): PPOS preconference workshops for all PPOS attendees

All the above courses and workshops will be held on the St. Jude campus. See below for more details about each opportunity.

ELNEC APRN Course

The two-day ELNEC APRN Course before PPOS will be held on Monday, September 23, and Tuesday, September 24.

The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Project is a national end-of-life educational program administered by City of Hope (COH) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) designed to enhance palliative care in nursing. The ELNEC APRN course is a two-day course designed for advance practice providers to receive advanced education in pain and symptom assessment and management, communication, and care at the end of life. There is also an educational component in palliative care related to quality improvement, education, and leadership.

Curriculum includes:

  • Introduction to Palliative Nursing for the APN
  • Communication
  • Advanced Pain Management
  • Ethical and Legal Aspects of Care
  • Symptom Management
  • Final Hours Pediatric
  • APRN Role Development and Leadership

Registration is $99 and is separate from PPOS registration.

Register for the ELNEC APRN Course.

Certified Pediatric Massage Therapist Training

The CPMT Training will be held Tuesday, September 24, and Wednesday, September 25.

This training is provided by the Liddle Kidz Foundation and will be led by master teacher Tina Allen. Participants will learn to provide massage therapy for children with special healthcare needs such as those who or hospitalized or have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Pediatric massage techniques for working with children with varied physical, developmental, and mental challenges will be demonstrated and practiced during hands-on in class sessions. The benefits and importance of individualized adaptations, including cultural considerations, for using massage therapy will be explained.

Registration is $475 and is separate from PPOS registration.

Find out more and register for the Liddle Kidz CPMT training.

Preconferences

PPOS preconference workshops will be held Wednesday, September 25.

These workshops will offer our advanced attendees a deeper dive into some of our most popular topics, such as communication skills, symptom management, and development of an institutional bereaved parent program. Please note that these preconference workshops are for advanced attendees and require a basic familiarity with and education in the topics.

The three preconference workshops include:

  • Advanced Pain and Symptom Management for Prescribers
  • Utilization of Bereaved Parents within a Healthcare Institution
  • Advanced Communication Skills

More information and descriptions can be found on the Schedule tab; registration for the preconference days is an add-on to PPOS registration.
